When tested at the same apertures as the EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II is clearly the superior at all common focal lengths and apertures. As is the case with most lens comparisons, as both lenses are stopped down the differences narrow and by f/8 there is little difference between these two lenses.
The two big advantages the Tamron 24-70mm VC has over the Canon 24-70 L II are Vibration Control and a substantially lower price tag. But the Tamron is still not inexpensive. Other than a wider field of view and some dust sealing the 24-70mm f/2.8 L and 28-70mm f/2.8 L are near twins and a bit difficult to distinguish between. The original model remains popular and less expensive. It's a great lens for any Canon EOS photographer looking for a versatile general purpose wide zoom lens that delivers excellent images.
