Jun 10, 2017 #3. Matt, your old fluid level may have been low after all those years. that can cause it to kind of float down the road, raise up on acceleration and dive more on braking. My Harley got that way, new seals and fluid made it a new bike. I did my T a few years ago, used the 10W medium Amsoil Shock Therapy.
Use dedicated fork oil, 10 weight is best for a "stock" like ride. ATF is about 7 weight and is too thin to dampen well. It's my opinion that 15 weight is too stiff for the average street cruiser. Whatever you use, be sure to flush some clean oil thru the forks a time or two. The oil down in the bottom will be nasty. vCash: 627. So it's definitely 17.62 oz per fork. That's a little over 500cc/ml per tube. I had bought a liter of fork oil and put half in each tube. Unless you have a great strategy for lifting the weight off the front forks, I suggest doing them one at a time. Fork extender/extentions/slugs are plain unsafe and in some jurisdictions illegal. The only reasonable way to accomplish it is new fork tubes. The sheet metal tube shrouds on the 750 ACE can be removed to simplify things. There are several members that have lengthened front ends on 750 Shadows.
I recently purchased a new to me 1981 Yamaha Virago 750H with 8400 miles on the odometer.:smile2: The fork seals are leaking and I am going to replace them instead of trying to just clean them,,,want the experience. I have already ordered the seals and dust seals. I have seen that fork oil comes in 5w, 10w, and 15w weights.
The 750, Honda's biggest street seller, has been with us in one form or another for over 10 years. Honda considers the Custom their standard model; in the 1980 model-year it outsold the F- and K-mod-els combined two-to-one. While each model has its own look, in basic hardware all of Honda's current 750s are very similar.
